"I jumped at the opportunity to do this film as it gave me a chance to work with Om Puri. Also, the chance to work with another first time feature director would be fun. Of course, Rensil had written one of the biggest hits a few years back called Rang De Basanti.
However, what made my decision to do this film is the 5 minute conversation I had with him over the phone. He had called me to offer the role after having seen AMAL. I felt I was talking to someone on the other end who was sincere, honest and passionate. So, I had to follow my gut instinct and accept the role in the film."

Autorickshaw driver Amal is content with the small, but vital, role he serves - driving customers around New Delhi as quickly and safely as possible. But his sense of duty is tested by an eccentric, aging billionaire, who, moved by Amal's humility, bequeaths him his entire estate before passing away. With only one month to discover and claim the inheritance, Amal's struggles with duty and wealth are threatened by all those around him - from a young injured beggar girl and a lovely store merchant, to the danger of the old man's upper-caste friends and siblings, all seeking to claim their share of the riches.

"As I said we had no idea how the short film would change our lives. Now, I am working with Nasseruddin Shah, Roshan Seth and Seema Biswas. Three actors who I have admired and have always dreamed of working with. Each day on set was like attending a master class. I will also add not only are they great talents but great people.
Richie directed this film as well. He is a filmmaker to watch. Not only is he passionate, he is also talented, inspirational and focused. "

Set in the bustling streets of New Delhi, "Amal" is a story about dreams being lived by the unlikeliest of people. |
"One of my favorite quotes is “Leap & the safety net will appear”. This short film is an example of that. I met Richie at the Toronto Reel World Film Festival. Everyday we would go see films and discuss what we liked and what we didn’t like. After that we kept in touch and a friendship started developing.
One day he sent me a short story called Amal. I read it and was moved by the ending of the short film. Richie expressed his interests in shooting the film in India. It took me less than a second to say let’s do it.
We put a fundraiser together and raised $1500 Canadian Dollars. That became the budget for the film. We asked a few good friends if they wanted to take part in this project. Luckily they all agreed. Before we knew it we were off to India to shoot this short film.
Little did we know that this little film would become a turning point for all of us.
Leap and the safety net will appear. "

"When an opportunity is presented you never know where it may lead. A friend had contacted me in regards to an American Independent film that was casting. I procrastinated for a week. He called me again to makes sure I had sent in a tape. On his assistance I put it together. In a weeks time I received a call from Aparna and she offered me the role.
This film also taught me about passion. The film is fully financied by Aparna. Even though we filmed it in 2003 she finally has it out there. It goes to prove if you are passionate about something anything is possible. "
