Rupinder Nagra is a Genie-nominated international actor who has worked extensively in Canada and now finds his work taking him to the UK and India.
He recently completed filming a crucial role in Kurbaan (2009), written and directed by Rensil D’Silva. The film is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions (Kabhi Kushi, Kahbhi Gum, Kal Ho Na Ho) He shares screen time with Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Om Puri, three of India’s leading film actors. The film releases worldwide on November 20th, 2009.
It was the award winning film Amal (2008) that garnered him his Genie nomination in 2009 for Best Actor. He was nominated along with Christopher Plummer and Paul Gross. The film also stars Nasseruddin Shah, Seema Biswas and Roshan Seth. He won the Borsos Award for Best Actor at the Whistler Film Festival. The film has gone on to win over 20 awards internationally and is part of the prestigious AFI 20/20 program. Rupinder also had the opportunity to be a part of Richie Mehta’s experimental film 678910 (2008). Other film credits include Amal – short (2004), Deepa Mehta’s Bollywood Hollywood (2002), and Aparna Malladi’s Mitsein (2002).
Rupinder is well known for his work with the hit improv comedy troupe Step Up. Having studied improve at Second City in Toronto, Canada, he has always had a love for improv. As a result, along with a couple of other friends he met at Second City, he formed the hit improv comedy troupe Step Up. To this day they are still remembered for their hit show ‘Bollywood or Bust’ as well as being the opening act for Joe Avati.
His theater credits include Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Aslan in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and he was part of the original musical Swing Time to Remember. Televison credits include Sony Television’s C.I.D., CTV’s The Associates and Mayday.
He is currently producing his first feature film titled Fricky. This film will be part of a new slate of films under Barking Dog Films.
